Hazing was not a factor in the drowning of a Bethune-Cookman University student last weekend.

Witnesses said Damian Parks, 22, was was washed out to sea by a strong current off the shore of Daytona Beach early Sunday.

The university has been investigating rumors that hazing played a role in Parks' death.

But officers with Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue said there was no sign that any hazing took place.

Parks was reportedly at the beach with four friends early Sunday morning, when he entered the water and began to struggle. One friend grabbed Parks for a moment before losing grip, and the group lost sight of Parks.

After a search via air and water, Parks' body was found washed ashore early Monday morning near the Ora Street approach.
