The city of Melbourne is working to make getting to school safer for students.

It's all part of the federally funded Safe Routes to School program, with a goal to encourage students from kindergarten through eighth grade to walk and bike to school safely.

City crews are beginning at University Park Elementary School, which is situated within an older Melbourne neighborhood and built before codes mandated sidewalk construction.

Many children attending the school are driven there because of the lack of sidewalks, with just a handful walking or biking to school.

New sidewalks are being built along with curb ramps.

The project costs nearly $450,000 and is expected to wrap up within the year.

City staff will evaluate the project six months afterward to see how it's working.

Other schools are being assessed for the same potential needs.
