Parents in the beachside Brevard County community of Satellite Beach, rattled by a string of violent crime, will hear how to better protect their children and their city.

A special town hall meeting is set for Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Satellite High School auditorium.

Parents are especially concerned after one teenager was nearly killed last month.

In February, investigators say three teenagers used a crowbar to attack a 17-year-old in his driveway for stealing marijuana and smoking paraphernalia from them.

The trio has been charged with premeditated attempted first degree murder.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey will lead the town hall meeting and will offer advice and listen to parents

He says drug use is a big problem across the country and it's leading to more violent crime.

Sheriff Ivey says parents need to be active in helping their children choose their friends.

“One of the constant themes that I hear is that they were hanging with the bad associates," said Ivey. "Now everyone is responsible for their own decisions, so that can’t be an escape clause, but the reality is if you’re hanging with the wrong people, you’re going to get in the wrong kind of trouble.”

Sheriff Ivey says parents should try and spend as much time as they can with their children.

Sheriff Ivey, along with Satellite Beach Police Chief Jeff Pearson and State Attorney Phil Archer, will also discuss the mysterious death of a 32-year-old woman.

Her body was found at a construction site the day after the teenager was attacked.

Investigators say the cases aren’t related and they are still looking for that woman’s killer.
