Hundreds of employees at one of Brevard County's largest companies got together to pack weekend lunches for less fortunate children.

Harris Corporation held its annual United Way Kickoff event Thursday morning in Palm Bay.

About 500 employees packed 7,000 meals for Brevard County children who otherwise may go without over the weekend.

Second Harvest Food Bank will hand out the meals.

“It says a lot about the heart and caring nature of the company that we have at Harris Corporation,” said CEO Bill Brown.

This is the seventh year Harris Corp has held this event.

Statistics show nearly 7 percent of Brevard County families live below the poverty line.

The number of children on free or reduced lunch in the area is 45 percent.
