A new outlet mall could be coming to Volusia County.

Developers want to build the Tomoka Town Center near I-95 and LPGA Boulevard.

A developer for Tanger Outlets came before members of the Daytona Beach Planning board Thursday, asking for changes to land development. It would pave the way for the construction of a multi-store Tanger outlet mall.

The North Carolina-developer owns only one other outlet mall in Florida, in Ft. Meyers.

If approved by city commissioners, Tomoka Town Center would be built on undeveloped land near I-95 and LPGA Boulevard, across the street from Vince Carter's restaurant which opened in 2010. Vince Carter is a former Orlando Magic player and currently a Memphis Grizzlies NBA star.

According to Michele Carter-Scott, Vince Carter's mom and part owner of the restaurant, news that the possibility of an outlet mall opening right next door to her came as a complete surprise. She said when she heard the news, she was jumping for joy.

"Traffic to our restaurant will increase dramatically, because who doesn't like to dine after shopping?" said Carter-Scott.

That enthusiasm was shared by board members who, after this meeting, brought the possibility of the Tomoka Town Center opening one step closer.

"This is going to be for more tourists and I'm really excited about it," said Jeff Hurt with the planning board.

Developers were not willing to share how many stores the outlet mall will include or a when ground will be broken, but that information will come next month.
