It could be considered a "cold case" of a different kind -- a Palm Bay couple is accused of stealing a quarter of a million dollars worth of air conditioners over a several month period.

Investigators said under the cover of night they would rip the units off from empty or foreclosed homes.

Investigators said it was to fuel their drug habit. Then the husband, using his skills as a repairman, would use those parts to make air conditioning repair calls for cash to buy pills and heroin.

Around 1:30 Wednesday morning, the Brevard Sheriff's helicopter watched a van driving the streets of a Palm Bay neighborhood.

Following behind on the ground, police officers waited to see what would happen.

All based on tips of possible wrongdoing, someone had been swiping air conditioning units from areas homes for quite some time.

Moments later, they said they spotted 29-year-old Vincent Modeen Jr. getting out of the van near Dorchester Road.

Police said his wife, 29-year-old Shauna Modeen, dropped him off.

The helicopter crew watched as Vincent, dressed in dark clothes and wearing a camouflage mask, hunkered down on the side of a home for about half an hour.

Officers soon approached and spotted him dismantling the air conditioning unit.

"The male had tools and equipment ready to go up to the houses, which is what we caught him in the act doing," said Sgt. Cliff Graves with Palm Bay Police Dept.

Modeen was arrested, his wife too, just a block away.

Police searched the couple's Altamira Street home, where Thursday afternoon piles of air conditioner parts covered the front yard. Officers said they uncovered a makeshift repair shop in the garage filled with bins of compressors, fan motors and more.

Neighbors said they've noticed many missing A/C units, especially on empty homes.

"It doesn't surprise me with all these vacant houses," said neighbor Nick Mocca.

Police said Modeen was skilled enough to dismantle an A-C unit in minutes. They ask anyone who had their A/C unit repaired by him to give them a call.

The parts are considered stolen property and more charges could be filed.
