Kids in Flagler County will see something new when classes start up this month -- a third meal after the school day is over.

The school board approved the plan unanimously Tuesday night.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture spearheads the program and there are a few caveats. These meals will be served only on certain campuses.

Like the breakfast program that is already in place, it won't cost families anything extra.

The school board signed off on the Afterschool Meals Program (AMP) at Belle Terre, Bunnell, Old Kings, Rymfire and Wadsworth Elementary schools as well as Phoenix Academy.

The current snack program, where kids enrolled in extended day programs are given a nutritious snack, would be replaced with a hot meal.

Using last year's numbers, the hot meal program would have generated more than $382,000 in revenue. The federal government will reimburse the funds to the school district.

This could bring in even more money, since the district is paid for how many kids participate. According to information provided to the school board, no extra staffing is needed to put this plan in place.

It's also hoped by offering this meal, even more working parents will enroll their children in after-school programs to take advantage of a dinner.

The schools qualify for the program because at least half the students enrolled are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
