Officials with the Iceland Meteorological Office confirmed Saturday morning a subglacial eruption of the Bárðarbunga volcano, but UCF's plans to travel to Ireland on Tuesday to square off against Penn State remain unchanged.

Iceland raised its aviation alert level to red — the highest on a scale of five — but all Icelandic airports remain open, according to reports.

UCF is scheduled to depart Tuesday for Saturday's 8:30 a.m. EST season-opening tilt against Penn State in Dublin — which is about 900 miles away from Iceland.

A UCF spokesman reiterated a statement from earlier this week, saying the school is aware of the volcanic activity and monitoring the situation. The team is still planning to depart Tuesday.

Officials said earlier in the week that a contingency plan is in place, but having the Knights host the game was "highly unlikely."

In 2010, an eruption of an Icelandic volcano produced an ash cloud for thousands of miles, grounding over 100,000 flights to and from Europe for six days.

Bárðarbunga's eruption has yet to reach the surface of the volcano, according to reports.
