Bullet holes and police tape can be found in a Lake County neighborhood where a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man on Saturday, July 12.
Deputies confirmed the incident around 5 p.m. on Saturday, and said Harold Roudebush tried to kill himself, and then tried to turn his gun on law enforcement.
Residents in the neighborhood who heard the commotion, and the gunfire, couldn't believe what was happening.
“Two police men went down in-between those two houses then there was a lot of ... loud yelling. And then all of the sudden we heard pop-pop-pop-pop," said Nora Barker.
Bullet holes on the side of this mobile home in the Lady Lakes mobile home community are the final remnants of what happened here Saturday afternoon.
We were told Lake County Sheriff’s office got a call that Harold Roudebush was outside of this house with a gun to his head, threatening to shoot himself.
When deputies arrived, Roudebush attempted to shoot himself.
“He pulled the trigger, the gun did not go off," said Lake County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Sgt. James Vachon. "He worked the action on the firearm, which would have reloaded a new round into the gun, and pointed it at deputies. That’s when they had to use deadly force."
“They were standing there with their guns drawn and we didn’t know what was happening but then all of the sudden we heard bang bang bang bang,” said Gordon Gray, neighbor and witness to the shooting.
Law enforcement officials later confirmed the gun was loaded, and said it appears deputies acted accordingly.
Many neighbors we spoke to said Roudebush was here with his girlfriend and they are both nurses at the local hospital. Now as investigators try to figure out what happened, neighbors are shocked and saddened.
“It’s a sad thing. You don’t expect it to happen so close to home,” added Gordon Gray.
LCSO officials confirmed those officers involved in the shooting are on suspended leave, which is protocol for any officer-involved shooting.
For now, The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the circumstances which led to this deadly shooting.
