In this part of Florida, golf carts rumble through what looks to be a developing nation.

"[It’s] the most interesting farm you'll ever see," comments Danielle Flood, with ECHO Global Farm.

What looks like a world away is really North Fort Myers. Not far from Interstate 75 in Lee County sits ECHO.

"ECHO's global farm is a living classroom where we can train people how to grow food in different regions," Flood said.

Imagine this working farm to be a test facility. What methods work here, along with the crops cultivated, can be used in Asia in rice patty fields or in the plains of Africa.

"Gram for gram, have more vitamin C than an orange, more potassium than a banana, more vitamin D than milk, and more iron than spinach," Danielle said about the Moringa tree. It’s a bush with little leaves that is solving world hunger. In fact, Danielle places the leaves in salad.

“It's pretty bland at first, and then it has a slight peppery aftertaste,” she said while handing me a sample, fresh off the bush. The Moringa leaves are not bad. Imagine it to be like spinach mixed with parsley.

Using low-tech methods like a pulley system, raw materials like vines or discarded rope and a little ingenuity, new technology is born.

ECHO’s appropriate technology center allows small-scale farmers to take what they have and then empower them to water their own crops. Small inventions can go a long way. A barn showcases tools created in the field from available materials.

ECHO partners with more than 130 nations, discovering new purposes for things that may have been considered trash.

"[We’re] helping enough small-scale farmers grow enough food to feed their families and their communities,” Danielle shared.

And just like any good attraction, the souvenir store at the exit allows folks to take plants home with them to practice what they learned.

"It can be used anywhere from a suburban backyard to a village in Africa."
