The nationwide search for the suspect in the killing of an elderly Cocoa woman is over after he turned himself into police in Richmond, Virginia.

Detectives said 32-year-old Marcus Royal -- a registered sex offender -- was released from jail on Saturday on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Police said he has a lengthy criminal history of attacking elderly women.

At approximately 8 a.m. Sunday, Royal entered 81-year-old Ethalya Faye Jones' home on Fiske Boulevard, brutally attacked and then murdered her.

Jones was killed as she was leaving for church. A neighbor who looked after her, a 58-year-old unidentified man, tried to intervene. He was also attacked by Royal. The man is fighting to survive at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Cocoa police released bank security photos showing Royal attempting to use the victim’s ATM cards.

Investigators said Royal walked into the Richmond, Va. Police Department and handed his identification to the chief of police, who was in the lobby at the time.

Royal told the chief he was wanted in Florida for murder.

Investigators from the Cocoa Police Department are currently on their way to Richmond.
