The search is on for a Seminole County man believed to be the driver who hit and killed two deaf people along Florida's Turnpike in St. Lucie County.

The crash happened late Monday night near Fort Pierce.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are looking to question Robert Bates, 68, of Sanford.

FHP said Bates has hired an attorney, who has contacted him, but troopers said the attorney will not tell them where Bates -- or his truck -- is.

"We would like him to do the right thing and turn himself into highway patrol and give him a chance to tell his side of the story," said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes.

Investigators said the two victims were from Polk County, and were both former students of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind:

  • Mariah King, 19, of Davenport
  • Vincent Mathews, 24, of Lakeland

Troopers said the victims, who were both deaf, had pulled over to change a tire, when a semi-truck hit and killed both King and Mathews, and then fled the scene.

Photos taken from a toll plaza camera showed a 2006 Peterbilt truck with damage to both sides on the front. The photos included the truck's license plate tag, which troopers said is registered to Mercer Transport.

"This guy is a professional driver," Montes said. "He drives for a living. He does have a few citations but nothing exorbitant. He knows what the law is, he's required to stay and again we just want to do the right thing. This family needs closure as to why this guy left the scene.
