Tuesday's murder of Barbara Pill marks the fifth time a Brevard County deputy has died in the line of duty, and the first in more than seven years.

2004 – Sgt. Lucille Ross

On Oct. 8, 2004, Ross was killed in a car accident while heading to the scene of a suicide on Merritt Island. Her department van struck the back of a tractor trailer on I-95, just north of State Road 407.

Sgt. Ross was a 29-year law enforcement veteran, and had served with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office for five years.

1996 – Deputy Sheriff Raymond Warner

Shortly after midnight on June 13, 1996, Warner was shot and killed when he and another deputy responded to an overnight burglary at Merritt Island High School.

The suspect had hidden under a table in a back office, and attacked Warner from behind when he entered the room. After a struggle, the suspect gained control of the deputy's gun and shot him seven times.

The other deputy was shot in the knee, but was able to return fire, killing the suspect.

Deputy Warner had served with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office for 15 years.

1987 – Deputy Robert Nicol

On Sept. 30, 1987, Nicol was killed during the pursuit of a suspect.

During a traffic stop, Nicol found the driver was in possession of marijuana. The suspect fled on foot, but as Nicol gave chase, he was struck by a Cadillac that had swerved to miss the suspect.

Nicol died of his injuries less than two weeks later. He was an 11-year veteran with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

1965 – Lt. Amos Cox

On Aug. 4, 1965, Lt. Amos "Rabbit" Cox became the first member of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office lost in the line of duty. He drowned during a rescue mission.
