It looks like something from James Bond, transforming from the size of your phone to a deadly weapon.

The “cell phone gun” could hit the market soon.

The creator of the pistol, Kirk Kjellberg, said it’s perfectly safe and for the public.

“I just decided there’s probably got to be a better way to carry and I was just looking around and noticed everyone had a smart phone, so why not make a pistol that would look like that?” Kirk said.

He said they spent a year engineering it and got approval from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.

“As long as the pistol has rifle barrel and cannot be fired in closed position, it is a pistol,” Kirk said.

Former Police Officer Jeff Pedro isn't quite on board with the idea.

“I can’t speak for all others, but I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. Overall my professional opinion is it is just a bad idea from a safety perspective and also from an access perspective—the inability to get it out, get it functional in a rapid situation would be extremely difficult,” Pedro said.

The way it looks also has people questioning if it could catch police off guard.

Pedro said it’s not likely because it has to be released from its disguise before firing.

“If the gun were to be released, police officers would be alerted to it and they’d pretty much be checking any cell phone the resembles the size and shape of the particular device,” he said.

Kirk said they have the transformation down to second but said they’ve also consulted with cops.

“It’s easier to shoot someone in a nefarious way with a regular pistol that it would be with ours,” Kirk said.

He said the guns will be mass produced and should be available for purchase by the end of the summer.
