Jesus Lanzo, 33, and 33-year-old Carlos Angler were killed early Saturday morning when a car driven by 54-year-old Anwar Askar slammed into them on the Veterans Expressway. Lanzo’s car hit the concrete barrier and burst into flames.

Troopers say Askar had been drinking. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and DUI homicide.

Lanzo’s wife, Glorimar Lanzo, said her husband was living and working in Tampa while she and their three children—aged 17 (from a previous relationship), 15 and 12—were in Rhode Island. They had plans on joining him in Tampa soon.

"We talked on the phone every day,” Glorimar said. “We talked about the future. He kept talking about buying a house in a year, how we just needed to go up from here. How we will start in the apartment and just go up from here. It was no turning back."

Glorimar said his kids were her husband’s world.

He loved sports, she said, but his real passion was preaching at church.

"I am just going to miss him and my kids are going to miss him even more,” Glorimar said. “My daughter’s not going to get a first dance at her wedding. He is not going to meet our grandkids."

Glorimar said she hopes this will be a lesson to others to never drink and drive.

"It’s just selfish,” she said. “They only think about themselves, they don’t think about the families out there that they are leaving fatherless, or motherless, childless because it could happen to anybody."

The Lanzo family has started a GoFundMe.com page to help cover funeral costs.
