Mowgli the clouded leopard cub is growing up fast.

The rare cub was born at Lowry Park Zoo on March 7. The cub, which was named after the character in "The Jungle Book," now weighs six pounds and has a full set of baby teeth. He is eating a meat-based baby food diet, which his handlers say he enjoys making into a mess.

Starting Saturday, Mowgli's outside playtime will be moved to a temporary enclosure while he practices running, jumping and pouncing. Staff members will supervise him, but they will start scaling back so he can become more independent.

Eventually, the zoo's staff wants him to adjust to a permanent habitat in the future.

The public can see little Mowgli at 11 a.m. at the new location.

Mowgli's parents, Yim and Malee, also live at the zoo. They are on exhibit together in the Asians Gardens habitat area. Mowgli is their first cub.

Adult clouded leopards weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and are about five feet long, which makes them the smallest of the "big cats."

The cats are considered vulnerable to extinction, as their native range is quickly being deforested. Researchers say hunting and poaching has also decimated their wild population.

Lowry Park is a member of the Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan, which aims to support the species' conservation.
