ORLANDO, Fla.— Jemile Weeks has done it all.

The former MLB player and Lake Brantley alum found his passion and excelled.

“Baseball itself, it gave me something to put a focus to,” said Jemile Weeks, former MLB player and Lake Brantley alum.

After a twelve year professional baseball career that focus has shifted.

“The heart work is the best work. There’s nothing touching changing a whole life,” said Weeks.

Weeks is changing lives in our community while using the sport that shaped his.

“What we have going on right now is baseball and softball empowerment program using non violent life skills attached to it,” said Weeks.

They call it WeFam, an organization that is redirecting our youth and washing away a negative narrative that surrounds West Orlando.

“They will be spoken to about how to respond to situations that might be adverse that they face every day. How to respect their parents. What to do. They have chores they have to get done. They get calls home based on GPAs being 2.5 or above,” said Weeks.

An initiative that has already seen success.

“Having this program gave me a sense of purpose,” said Jahmon Taylor, a 23-year-old pitcher from Orlando.

23-year-old pitcher, Jahmon Taylor found his passion and much more thanks to Jemile and WeFam.

“I don’t think there is anything comparable to it to be honest. It’s my happy place. It’s my place of zen. Without this program I don’t know where I would’ve been or what I would’ve been doing so it definitely saved me. It gave purpose. It gave me drive. It gave me something to look forward to on the weekends. I was able to earn a degree through him. I was able to play professional baseball,” said Taylor.

Now Jahmon is taking it one step further and helping the next generation.

“It’s my opportunity to give back. Especially coming up through the program it’s like full circle because they gave to me so I am able to give back to them and help kids fall in love with the game,” said Taylor.

Proving that a little heart work can go a long way.

“I believe that legacy is everything in our lives and what you leave here is the value of your life,” said Weeks.
