DELAND, Fla. — A roundabout — just under a year old — is the site of several crashes in DeLand, and now a viewer wants Volusia County to make it safer.

What You Need To Know

  • Volusia County opened a roundabout at Orange Camp Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Beltway in April 2022

  • Roger LeBouef says the roundabout is dangerous due to speeding drivers and two lanes of traffic

  • The city of DeLand found 94 crashes have been reported at this spot since the roundabout opened

  • Volusia County is making changes such as removing lane markings and modifying signs heading into the roundabout

Roger LeBouef says drivers are going too fast entering the roundabout at Orange Camp Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Beltway in DeLand.

“I was almost hit here,” said LeBouef.

The city of DeLand pulled the data and found 94 crashes have been reported at this spot since the roundabout opened back in April 2022.

“I had to slam my brakes on because I was trying to go to the right and the car just went through the yield at a fast pace speed and caused the problem,” LeBouef remembers.

LeBouef also says the other issue with the roundabout is it has two lanes for traffic.

“If you’re in the outside lane, now I want to go in, somebody’s coming out, that’s where you’re getting all the accidents,” he said.

Spectrum News 13 told Volusia County about the problems, and County Engineer Tadd Kasbeer said they are aware of the concerns and the crashes.

The county has already made changes such as removing some of the lane markings and modifying some of the signs heading into the roundabout.

“This should be just one lane so that way you don’t have the crossing,” LeBouef suggests.

The county has contemplated reducing the roundabout to a single lane.

During construction, the roundabout was a single lane and Kasbeer said there were very few crashes.

But the primary reason they won’t reduce the lanes is that FDOT is building a roundabout just three miles to the north at State Road 44 and Kepler Road. That FDOT roundabout will be two lanes. To keep it consistent for drivers, both roundabouts will be two lanes.

Construction on that second roundabout at State Road 44 and Kepler Road is expected to begin in the fall of 2024.
