SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — One Seminole County resident is asking: What’s holding up repairs on a busy stretch of highway in Sanford?

Construction started nearly two years ago on U.S. Highway 17/92 between Lake Mary and Airport boulevards.

Frustrated by the road work, Vernon Prince, who drives the road regularly, said he wants to know when it will end.

What You Need To Know

  • Construction started on U.S.-17/92 between Lake Mary and Airport boulevards in March 2021

  • Vernon Prince, who drives in the area regularly, says the roadwork makes it difficult to get around

  • Florida Department of Transportation officials say the project includes building continuous outside turn lanes to improve access to businesses and residences

  • They say unexpected work on utilities in the area has delayed completion until this summer

“To me, I think it’s a very perilous area,” he said. “The roads are uneven, the cones are there — it just makes for a very, very tenuous situation to have to drive in this area.”

As part of a project that started in March of 2021, the Florida Department of Transportation is building continuous outside turn lanes and resurfacing the four travel lanes of U.S.-17/92. Agency officials say they hope the project improves access to businesses and residential properties.

“It has been here for a long time, and I don’t see any improvement and I would love for that to happen,” Prince said.

According to FDOT District 5 Public Information Director Cindi Lane, unforeseen issues have caused delays in the construction work.

“The project team has encountered unexpected work with coordinating, locating and relocating facilities owned by various utility companies,” she said, adding that some of the problems required project redesigns that led to additional delays.

Prince said he would like to see workers step up efforts in the construction project to make up for some of that lost time.

“I would like to see some expeditious activity in terms of getting this area fixed,” he said.

Officials said they hopes to have construction wrapped up this summer.

In the meantime, FDOT is working with Seminole County to adjust signal timings to ease traffic during construction, officials said.

Work also includes the installation of pedestrian hybrid beacons at two adjacent crosswalks and modification of the intersection of U.S.-17/92 and Airport Boulevard.
