Felicia Lakharam says her son was coming home from school in November when he was hit near Auburn Cove Lane.

“Hayden called me, crying hysterically, ‘Mom, I was just hit,’ “ she said. “Obviously, I’m hysterically crying, worried, wondering what happened, is he ok?”

Surveillance video shows a silver sedan hitting the 12-year-old and then taking off.

He was taken to the hospital with a fractured kneecap and some back injuries.

“Even if I don’t find the driver, the intersections need to be safer,” Lakharam says.

She wants traffic devices installed to slow down speeding drivers and make Avalon Park Boulevard safer to cross on both sides of the Publix Plaza at Auburn Cove Lane and Cygnus Drive.

“I’m hoping — and I’m not saying it will happen — (we will get) a speed bump so it will bottom out their car when they’re speeding,” Lakharam says. “Once or twice of it happening to these people, to these drivers, they’ll realize not to be speeding in this area.”

A traffic engineering division manager says the county plans to replace the existing crosswalk signs with larger ones, install 24-hour flashing beacons on both Avalon Boulevard north and south, and add vertical yellow retro-reflective strips at all warning signs.

“The things they put in place are not what I want,” Lakharam says. “They won’t make us safe.”

Lakharam says she doesn’t think that will be enough to slow down or stop drivers.
