OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — One St. Cloud resident is working to get drivers to slow down on Bass Highway in Osceola County.

What You Need To Know

  • Peter Schneider says drivers speed on Bass Highway

  • Osceola County determined speed bumps weren’t needed after conducting a study

  • Schneider says the analysis is flawed because drivers slow down on purpose

Peter Schneider says most drivers don’t drive the posted speed limit, and he’d like to see speed bumps installed.

“Most everybody doesn’t do 35 miles per hour,” said Schneider. “There are a few people that are considerate and do less than 35. But 5 o’clock in the morning, it literally sounds like I-95, I mean no exaggeration.”

An Osceola County spokesperson said the county conducted a speed bump analysis last year and determined Bass Highway didn’t have enough of a problem.

“People see the hoses running across the road and they slow right down because there’s something in the road,” Schneider said. “So the tests are totally inaccurate as far as trying to get an actual reading of what the traffic is like.”

If not speed bumps, Schneider would at least like the speed limit to be lowered, or for a permanent digital radar speed sign to be installed.

“Personally myself, I looked on Amazon, (a digital radar speed sign is) $3,500. I just didn’t want to spend $3,500 on one,” he said.

Schneider’s plans to get neighbors to sign a petition to get some kind of traffic calming devices installed.
