DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — International Speedway Boulevard and Clyde Morris Boulevard has reopened after police investigated an incident at Mainland High School.

Accodring to the Daytona Beach Police Department, students had to be evacuated from their classes Friday afternoon after an emergency button was activated at 12:37 p.m.

"Everybody just started running, and I had no clue," said 11th-grade student Alondra Principesosa.

An increased presence of law enforcement was already at the school on Friday after the school resource officer there found a note the day before that threatened a school shooting.

"The faculty or the staff that was on school and hit that panic button, she heard someone reference a gun," said DBPD Chief Jakari Young. "She saw some students starting to run from the cafeteria, so she did the right thing by hitting that alarm."

Volusia County Schools first equipped staff with emergency badges at the start of the 2020 school year.

Every teacher throughout the county has a panic button with a GPS tracker, and law enforcement is instantly notified when it is pressed repeatedly.

"I rather overreact than underreact," Young said. "I rather over-respond than not take it seriously."

During the response, emergency personnel shut down the intersection near the school out of precaution as officers worked to clear the campus.

Police were able to clear all rooms on campus and determind it was a false alarm. There were no reports of shots fired or injuries, and police said they found no threat to the school or students.
