Lance Annicelli lives across the street from Kelly Park School.

“This intersection looks to be a bit of a challenge,” he said.

The only spot for parents to drop off their children at Kelly Park School is off Jason Dwelley Parkway. But for Annicelli and others that live in Rock Springs Ridge, that’s also one of their main entrances at Spinfisher Drive.

“There is no flow,” Annicelli said. “There is just a single-point entry. This is going to be a choke point.”

Annicelli is concerned the new school will cause backups, especially before and after school.

The parent pickup and drop-off queue can accommodate 243 vehicles, enough to keep most vehicles on school property, a district spokesperson said.

Annicelli said he believes backups on Jason Dwelley Parkway could cause parents to drop off and pick up their kids on Spinfisher Drive, causing more congestion and safety concerns.

“This road is not designed for them to queue right here,” he said. “If they do, they’ve got to compete with the other traffic going to work.”

The district worked with civil and traffic engineers, in consultation with the city of Apopka.

School administrators said they hope the single-point entry will actually reduce the potential for crashes.

The city of Apopka has installed a new traffic signal at Kelly Park Road and Jason Dwelley Parkway to accommodate the new school.

They’ll be monitoring the intersection of Jason Dwelley and Spinfisher, and if need be, they may install a traffic light there as well.
