OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Drivers can expect big changes at a major I-4 intersection in Osceola County — a new traffic pattern at County Road 532.

What You Need To Know

  • The Diverging Diamond Interchange is now open at the intersection of I-4 and County Road 532, near Champion's Gate

  • Statistics show this new driving pattern reduces left turn crashes and improves traffic flow

  • Six additional diverging diamond interchanges are planned for the I-4 corridor in the coming years

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) says some 65,000 vehicles come through this area near Champion's Gate everyday.

That's why project managers wanted to convert I-4 and County Road 532 into a 'diverging diamond' interchange.

Drivers switch to the left side of the road at the traffic signal. After going under I-4, drivers will return to the right side at the second signal.

Statistics show this driving pattern reduces left turn crashes and improves traffic flow.

"Traffic in the morning here is horrendous," local commuter Frank Miller said. "I mean, it's 30 minutes just to drive through here."

Frank and his wife Theresa live nearby and have endured heavy traffic back-ups for years.

"We've actually sat on the other end of it, on Ronald Reagan, and it took me 45 minutes just to get to the Publix," Theresa said.

"We do want to give it a few days as drivers adjust to those traffic patterns. Maybe it's a good idea for the first few times that you come through here allow yourself a little extra time," FDOT spokesperson David Parks said. "You may adapt to it quickly, but that driver next to you may not, so definitely pack your patience."

It's the first time through the new intersection for Orlando's Jackie Early.

"Very confusing — I have no idea where I'm going," she says.

We explained how to navigate the diamond, but there's a learning curve for her.

"I'll take your word for it," she said laughing.

Six additional diverging diamond interchanges are planned for the I-4 corridor in the coming years.

Next up is at I-4 and Daryl Carter Parkway. Construction is set to start later this year.
