ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — There is some confusion for drivers who believe the new I-4 Express lanes mean they can go faster than the free lanes.

They can’t.

What You Need To Know

  • Troopers issued 65 speeding tickets on the new I-4 Express lanes during their first month

  • The speed limit for I-4 Express is 60 mph

  • FDOT has no plans to raise the speed limit

Last month, Florida Highway Patrol caught one driver going 70 miles per hour over the speed limit, and he wasn’t alone.

Tickets have been issued for drivers going 99, 101, even 131 miles per hour.

Troopers issued 65 speeding tickets during the first month of the new express lanes’ operation.

The speed limit for both the general use and the express lanes on I-4 is the same, 60 miles per hour.

“It just seems too slow. Almost all these highways around here are 70 miles per hour,” said Jake Foutz, the owner of Fitness Xperts Gym in Altamonte Springs. “It’s express lane, thinking you’re going to go fast past traffic.”

With fewer vehicles using the tolled express lanes, Foutz admitted it can be difficult to stay at 60 mph.

“It’s hard to go the speed limit,” he said.

The Florida Department of Transportation said it has no plans to raise the speed limit in the express lanes. A spokesperson said the goal is to provide a reliable trip, not a faster one.

Any ticket that is written for 30 or more over the posted speed limit is a mandatory court appearance, and the judge will decide on the fine, FHP said.
