LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Lake County commissioners are planning to discuss a permanent monument to honor the Groveland Four Tuesday morning.

Four African American men, Ernest Thomas, Walter Irvin, Samuel Shepherd, and Charles Greenlee, were wrongly accused of raping a white girl, then 17-year-old Norma Padgett, in 1949 in the city of Groveland.

Earlier this month Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and a state clemency board officially pardoned the Groveland Four.

The monument would go on the front lawn of the county's Historic Courthouse.

The city of Groveland and the Florida Legislature have issued apologies to the Groveland Four and their families.
