PALM COAST, Fla. -- Flagler County deputies rescued two women and a service dog Friday after their SUV crashed into a lake.

  • Deputies pulled the two women, dog from SUV in the water
  • Driver says she misjudged turn while traveling in heavy rain

The Sheriff's Office received a 911 call just after 4:30 from Nancy Burns, who told a dispatcher she had accidentally driven into the water at Waterfront Park in Palm Coast. Burns told the dispatcher she couldn't open any doors and that the jeep was filling with water.

Burn's daughter, who is blind, and a service dog were also in the vehicle.

When deputies arrived, they spotted the jeep and jumped in the water. Deputies were able to open the driver side door to get the two women and the dog safely to shore.

Burns later told deputies she misjudged a turn while driving in heavy rain.

Neither of the women nor the dog were injured, authorities said.

"This story could have had a very different ending," Sheriff Rick Staly said. "I am extremely proud of the deputy Meyers and deputy Collins for their quick response to the scene and how they went into the water without hesitation."
