Thirty-eight-year-old Gregory Edwards was arrested Sunday by West Melbourne Police Department after allegedly battering a worker who was putting toys in a truck for a children's charity.

Deputies say Edwards was acting erratically as he was being taken into custody, and reportedly became combative with the responding officer during the arrest and booking process.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the medical episode happened at Brevard County Jail.

He was pronounced dead at an area hospital Monday.

An autopsy on his death is pending. Deputies say investigators have identified past inhalant use as a potential cause of the medical emergency.
