FLORIDA — For the 11th consecutive year, the St. Johns River Water Management District has designated April as Springs Protection Awareness Month.

Reaffirming its commitment to protect Florida’s springs, the proclamation was officially approved by the district’s governing board on March 12. The declaration emphasizes the district’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the unique role of Florida’s natural resources and urges residents to actively contribute to their protection.

“Protecting Florida’s springs is embedded in our daily responsibilities and lies at the core of our mission to preserve the state’s water quality and natural resources,” St. Johns River Water Management District Executive Director Mike Register said. “Over the past 10 years, the district has collaborated on 168 projects, resulting in the conservation of millions of gallons of water. This has led to a significant reduction of harmful nutrients entering springsheds across the district.”

Current various projects for the district focus on reducing pollution, managing groundwater usage and mitigating other impacts on the springs.

The district covers all or part of 18 counties in northeast and east-central Florida. Counties entirely in the district are Brevard, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Indian River, Nassau, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia. Counties partially in the district are Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Lake, Marion, Okeechobee, Orange and Osceola.
