At the top of our tower is what we call a radome. The dome protects a dish that is scanning the horizon at 360 degrees and out approximately 300 miles from our radar location in West Cocoa. It gives us a great view of not only the state of Florida, but down into the Bahamas, providing you an earlier heads up on tropical activity and fronts coming in our direction.

The dome sheds rain at 10 times more than a typical radome. When it comes to the three to four inch rainfall rates per hour, it sheds that intense rain so we are able to see through and give you a clearer view of the storm itself.

Our data and equipment center allows us as meteorologists to get a raw look at Klystron 13 behind the scenes. We can change the elevation at which the radar scans the horizon, allowing us to see storms that are farther away or even closer. It gives us a better look at storms, and you more notice of approaching weather.

 

We can also take a sector scan of a storm, grabbing a 45 degree angle, allowing us to pick out the worst part of the storm and provide you more of a heads up nasty weather is coming your way. This will come in particularly handy when tropical systems are moving in and we are able to grab a section of the storm to find potential tornadoes.

Klystron 13 provides better resolution, or on-air look, lower loss of data when dangerous storms are approaching, and the ability to show dangerous wind live and not delayed like other radars in town. It'll help pinpoint the sea breezes much quicker and three times more accuarately as well.
