LAKELAND, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office stated that a fatal Saturday motorcycle crash in Lakeland might have been caused by speeding.

  • Travis Lester was wearing his helmet during crash
  • Deputies say the skid mark was 300 feet long

At around 6:26 p.m., Travis Lester, of Lakeland, was driving his motorcycle going east on Jungle Street "at a high-rate of speed" when he hit his brakes and caused an estimated 300-foot skid mark, according to the Sheriff's office.

The motorcycle crossed over Combee Road and struck a 2008 Dodge Nitro so hard that it moved the unoccupied SUV three feet, confirmed deputies in a news release.

The Nitro was parked at a home on Combee Road.

The 33-year-old Lester, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle.

Lester was taken to Lakeland Regional Health, where he was pronounced dead, the Sheriff's Office stated.

The investigation is ongoing.
