What You Need To Know

  • Oviedo High School junior Dawson Barr is a 6-foot, 4-inch point guard

  • His team is off to a 4-1 start, and Barr currently averages 23 points per game

  • Along with his accomplishments on the court, Barr has also done well in the classroom and has a 4.2 GPA

The 6-foot, 4-inch point guard first started playing the game with his family at home.

"Growing up, this is something that I have always did with my brother and dad, it was a family thing," said Barr. "My brother and me and every once in a while my mom, just fun times in the backyard."

"Dawson Barr is a pleasure to coach, you talk about coach on the floor, he is it," said head coach Jason Vallery, his fifth season as Oviedo's head coach. "We trust him to call plays, make plays, a really great asset not only on the court, but to Oviedo High school."

He has also found success in the classroom: Going into this school year, Barr carried a 4.2 GPA.

"It helps me to get some confidence, it reminds me that I need to continue to work hard on and off the court to succeed," said Barr.

"I have been lucky enough to be his coach, but be a teacher to him in the classroom as well," Vallery said. "Last year he took my world history class — wonderful student, hard working student, attention to detail and really concerned with his grades and not just about his basketball shot."

Vallery believes that this success is just the beginning for Dawson.

"Going into his junior year, going into this AAU season, I think Dawson is going to make big waves and attract attention in the next level," said Vallery.

So far, Barr has received interest from some northeastern schools along with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach.
