The NCAA is allowing student-athletes to begin voluntary workouts beginning June 1. The UCF Knights are not wasting any time letting their students get back to work.

Sixty football players will be back on campus and working out Monday as sports around the nation begin to reopen with the phased reopenings of other businesses. No other athletes are expected to return to campus for voluntary workouts outside the football team this week.

The Knights announced student-athletes on campus can use strength and conditioning areas and other athletic facility. No coaches can be present for workouts yet.

The returning student-athletes will take part in a week of reorientation that includes a test for COVID-19.

"Certainly health and safety are our number-one priorities and are at the core of every element involved as we take the first step forward in terms of a return to college athletics, while at the same time being ever mindful of the challenges posed by COVID-19," UCF athletics director Danny White said. "Our staff has been consulting regularly with national health experts, as well as colleagues within our league (American Athletic Conference) and locally with Orlando Health. We are committed to keeping student-athletes, staff, coaches, campus and the community as safe as possible amid the pandemic. We expect flexibility to be required as we navigate multiple new sets of circumstances."

UCF said in addition to the training for student-athletes, testing and limited access to the facilities, the university will adopt policies to clean all equipment after use and deep clean the facilities multiple times per week. UCF's athletic department says about two-thirds of the football players returning live on campus and there will be additional plans in case they have to isolate or quarantine any player.

UCF said two additional waves of players are expted to return to campus in June and then a third group some time after that.
