Timber Creek’s football team has only lost one game this season. A lot of their success stems from the chemistry the team has. In this addition of athlete of the week Despina Barton explains how a near perfect offensive performance for Jake Johnson helped guide the wolves to a district championship:

Entering last Friday night’s game against Winter Park, Timber Creek’s Jake Johnson knew exactly what he was playing for.

“We knew what was on the line, a district championship, it hasn’t been won here since 2015,” Jake Johnson explained. “

We knew what we had to do we knew what was on the line and we just had to go out there, stick together, play as a team and just get the job done.”

Johnson and the Wolves delivered.  The senior quarterback guided a game winning drive, helping the Wolves to a dramatic, 35-28 win.

“For him to be able to have a big game on Friday night (was huge),” Timber Creek Head Coach Jim Buckridge said. “Because we haven’t been clicking offensively, we’ve been pretty good but not clicking and it just kind of clicked on Friday night and he was unbelievable.”

Johnson connected on 17 of his 20 attempts for 267-yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass in the first half.

Jake’s performance Friday night against Winter Park was one for the ages especially when you consider he missed the entire last year with a torn ACL.

“I like to make plays, just love when the ball is in my hands and just like to go to work and I like playing in the big games,” Johnson added. “So that’s my biggest thing. I play better when it’s a bigger kind of game.”

And he showed it—in the biggest game of the year.

“We were celebrating the hard work we put in just to know it finally paid off and we finally achieved what we’ve been talking about this whole year,” Johnson said of the field celebration.

But they are not done, yet.  With that win, the team guaranteed a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Buckridge knows his team has a chance to keep this special season going.

“Jake is the chemistry, you don’t have to always be the most talented team because this isn’t the most talented team but they play hard for each other, play well for each other.”
