ORLANDO, FLA – Jeff Turner is an entertainer. Maybe not the kind you think of, but every night he captures Orlando Magic fans with his iconic call.

“If there’s a big three-pointer in the game, I will give a ‘kapaya.’” Turner said at Friday’s Magic shoot around. “It’s a long story but I use the word ‘kapaya.’”

The meaning of the word isn’t clear but Turner uses it as a pat on the back. Most Magic fans would send a ‘kapaya’ his way for his body of work the last 30 years. After a seven-year stint as a player during the early stages of the franchise, Turner stayed committed to the Magic serving as a radio, studio and TV analyst.

“I was here from the beginning so I feel like I have ownership in this team because I have been here,” Turner said. “I want success for this organization, for this city.”

The love for his team shows in his broadcasts. According to former teammates, Jeff is the perfect fit for his sideline role.

“Jeff was the kind of guy, he was a perfectionist on the court,” said former teammate Nick Anderson.  “Jeff wanted to be in the right place all the time, offensively, defensively, very smart.”

His knowledge of the X’s and O’s isn’t the only reason for his broadcast success. Jeff’s trademark enthusiasm gives a boost to the game.

“The energy is because I care and I love basketball,” Turner said, “but I hope I’m giving basically what I would want as when I’m watching a game.”

Magic fans get a full dose of Jeff’s energy every night on TV. If you happen to catch a game live, another Turner will keep you entertained.

“I’ve been an entertainer since I was three,” said Jack Turner, an Amway Center Usher who’s also Jeff’s uncle. “If I hear a song that has a good beat, I just can’t sit still.

To Jeff, he’s Uncle Jack. To Magic fans, he’s simply known as the Dancing Usher. The legend grew a few years back at a regular season game with the Isley Brother’s “Shout” echoing through Amway.

“He started dancing and they had him on the jumbotron,” Jeff said. “Our camera guys got a shot of the usher. I waited until we were in break to tell our crew ‘you guys know that’s my uncle, right? That’s my Uncle Jack.”

“When they started putting me on camera, I was in shock,” Jack said. “The people who I work with said the Magic Organization likes it and said to keep doing it.”

From there on out, every game, when “Shout” is played, fans can expect a shot of dancing Uncle Jack.

“People will be like ‘I love your Uncle Jack,’” Jeff said. “I love the dancing usher. What about the broadcast? Do you watch the broadcast? Oh yeah but we like Uncle Jack.”

“His uncle gets it in,” Anderson said. “He’s up there getting that work in as we would say. He gets the crowd working and he gets the dancers dancing with him. I guess that’s part of the blood where Jeff gets his energy from.”

It must run in the family. Jack and Jeff are just two Turners’ who happen to be entertainers as well.

“I’m proud of my family and my Uncle Jack,” Jeff said. “He is a showman. That’s what he does.”

The spotlight may shine on Uncle Jack from time to time, but he’s more interested in sharing it with his Magic family.

“I don’t want it to be about me,” Jack said. “I want it to be about the Magic Organization and their fans. I’m just there to make fans feel better about coming to the game.”

Jack Turner will sing the national anthem at the Amway Center on Dec. 19 prior to the Magic’s game against the Spurs.
