FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Spectrum News is excited to announce a winner of the Spectrum News 13 High School Scholar award. We’re awarding a $1,000 scholarship to Logan Winfree, who demonstrated outstanding academic ability while balancing volunteer work.

What You Need To Know

  • Spectrum News is awarding four high school seniors with $1,000 scholarships

  • Students were nominated by school staff or community members who found the students exemplified extraordinary academic or athletic ability

  • Logan Winfree holds a 5.37 weighted GPA. He excelled in math, was dual-enrolled, all while running cross country and holding a leadership position with the National Honor Society

Winfree spent many days under the hot Florida sun working to make the community he loves a cleaner place. He frequently volunteered in clean-ups, picking up trash near Matanzas High or at the beach.

He said his volunteer work through National Honor Society helped him connect with the school and surrounding community.

“It helps you make friends and create those connections,” Winfree said. “It creates community involvement, which I don’t think I would have without NHS.”

In addition to other volunteer work through NHS, Winfree also volunteered at a local food pantry.

Throughout the years, he ran both cross country and track. His coach, who happened to be his math teacher as well, nominated him for the award.

“He was literally the smartest kid in the class. Much smarter than me — and he’s always been that way,” said Tim Kane, the cross country and track coach at Matanzas High School.

Kane said Winfree always give his all for activities in which he takes part.

“He does the right thing, you know? He’s a person you can always count on,” Kane said.

With a whopping 5.37 weighted grade-point average, Winfree said he’s excited to continue his education and study computer science. Winfree will use the scholarship money toward his education at UNF, where he’s excited to start a new chapter of his life.

Spectrum News is honored to award Winfree as a Spectrum News 13 High School Scholar.
