ORLANDO, Fla. — While many people will be able to warm up in those shelters tonight, some people still have nowhere to go.

This means some will be sleeping on the streets in freezing temperatures around Central Florida.

What You Need To Know

  • Although there are shelters that people will be able to warm up in this weekend, some will still be on the streets

  • James and Crystal Worthy, a homeless couple living on the streets of Orlando, made a shelter for themselves on a sidewalk

  • James had a job previously, but was never paid for his employment. He hired an attorney to try and recover what he is owed, but it could take a while to resolve

On an Orlando street many might not even travel down lives James and Crystal Worthy, a couple who married in and moved to Florida, but have somehow found themselves sleeping on the streets during this cold blast of winter.

"Christmas on the sidewalk broke," said James.

James and Crystal sleep on the sidewalks of the street during these chilly nights in their homemade shelter.

“A lady (saw) us homeless sleeping on the sidewalk and drove by and gave us a mattress,” James said.

Their hard luck story began three weeks ago when James took a job as a local chef. The former marine says he worked at a resturant but never got paid by the owner for his employment. He was counting on the cash for rent.

“I’m still homeless. Sleeping on the sidewalk, because she did not pay me," said James. "She knew I needed that check, that first check to get ourselves off the streets into the place."

James has documented his employment, and also hired an attorney to try and recover what he is owed, but that might take weeks — if not, months — to resolve.

In the meantime, the two are trying to survive the dangers of living along the street.

The couple says they are scared every night because cars travel up and down the streets all the time. It may not be the safest or warmest place to be in all of Orlando,  but they hope with hugs, blankets and each other, they will somehow survive these freezing cold nights.

The couple said they tried getting into a nearby shelter, but they did not have room for Crystal, so they continue to be together during these tough times.
