A new Marquette Law School Poll national survey released Thursday shows support has grown for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to run for president, and even shows him tied with President Joe Biden in a hypothetical 2024 matchup.

What You Need To Know

  • Researchers asked respondents who they would vote for if the 2024 election was today

  • In the latest round of polling, both DeSantis and Biden received 42% of support from the respondents, making it a hypothetical tie

  • The poll also asked respondents whether they would vote for Biden or Trump

  • Favorability for Trump has decreased, but results also show favorability for DeSantis has increased

The survey, conducted Nov. 15-22, 2022, included 1,004 adults nationwide with a margin of error of +/-3.7 percentage points. Of those adults, 840 were registered voters, with a margin of error of +/-4 percentage points. The Republican subsample has a margin of error of +/-6.1 percentage points, and the Democratic subsample margin of error is +/-5.6 percentage points.

The researchers also interviewed polled individuals in January, March and September, asking respondents who they would vote for if the 2024 election was today. In the latest round of polling, both DeSantis and Biden received 42% of support from the respondents. Since January, the support for DeSantis has grown while support for Biden has remained stable.

The poll also asked individuals whether they would vote for Biden or former President Donald Trump. Biden continues to lead, with 44% to Trump’s 34%. However, 23% said they would prefer not to vote or vote for someone else.

As for party lines, both Republicans and Democrats are divided when it comes to having Trump or Biden as the nominees for 2024. Of the group of Republicans and independents who lean Republican, 55% said they would like to see Trump run in 2024, but 45% said they would not like him to run.

The support for Trump to run in this group of decreased since the previous national Marquette poll in September, which showed 60% wanted to Trump to run and 40% did not.

However, among the same group, 68% of them hold a favorable opinion of DeSantis, 10% have an unfavorable opinion and 22% said they don't know enough to give a rating. That is a stark growth from Marquette's January poll, which showed 57% had a favorable opinion, 9% were unfavorable and 34% didn't have an opinion of DeSantis.

Of the group of registered voters who are Democrats or independents who lean Democratic, 49% said they would like to see Biden run in 2024 whereas 51% said they would not. This wasn't a question asked in Marquette's September poll.

Among registered voters who are Democrats or independents who lean Democratic, 49% would like to see Biden run in 2024 and 51% would not. In September, 44% wanted him to run and 56% did not.
