SANFORD, Fla. — Mary Walker says she’s concerned for school children, like her fourth-grade daughter, when class lets out at Pinecrest Elementary School in Sanford.

“My concern is there is going to be a head-on collision,” Walker said. “A child could possibly get hit while crossing.

What You Need To Know

  • Parent Mary Walker says she is concerned about student safety because of the after-school pickup line at Pinecrest Elementary School

  • She says drivers often cross the double line and use the opposite side of the road to pass the line

  • Sanford police say they are implementing a new traffic pattern for vehicles flowing through the area

“It just doesn’t make any sense because (drivers are) crossing the double line to speed through the school zone to get through the traffic,” she said.

Drivers use the stretch of 27th Street to get into their neighborhood, or use it as a cut-through between U.S.-17/92 and Sanford Avenue, Walker said.

“It’s just real dangerous,” she said. “It’s no place to have a car pickup line at all.”

Officials with the Sanford Police Department said a new traffic pattern has been implemented in the area, which prohibits westbound drivers on 27th Street to turn left into the school and forces westbound drivers to continue driving through the area.

Drivers in the school pickup line are told to pull off to the right shoulder to let eastbound traffic flow.

Walker said that is not currently happening, and drivers are still crossing the double-line to get by.

While Walker said she doesn't see how that would be legal in any situation, a Sanford Police Department spokesperson said it’s actually legal to cross a double-line if there’s an obstruction.

Regardless, Walker said the problem exists and she wants others to be aware of the danger it could pose to school children.

“When I see stuff like this, when it comes to a child’s safety — my child’s safety — I have to say something,” Walker said.
