FLORIDA — Gasoline prices are down sharply since Saturday after Florida's Motor Fuel Tax Relief Act of 2022 went into effect on Oct 1.

What You Need To Know

  • Gas prices in Florida are down to an average $3.22 per gallon

  • That is down from $3.37 per gallon on Saturday

  • The sharp decline is because of a suspension of the state's gas tax in October

  • The Florida Legislature in May approved the gas tax holiday

The state average was $3.22 per gallon Monday, AAA reported, down from $3.37 on Saturday. Monday's average price was more than 50 cents per gallon less than the national average of $3.80 per gallon.

The Florida Legislature passed the gas tax holiday in May, when prices were averaging more than $4 per gallon, as part of an effort to help save Floridians money amid escalating prices because of inflation. It suspends Florida’s 25.3 cents per gallon in gas taxes throughout October.

"This gas tax builds on the previous downward pressure on pump prices, stemming from global recession concerns and underwhelming fuel demand," said Mark Jenkins spokesman, AAA — The Auto Club Group. "Prices are now beginning to dip below $3 a gallon at various gas stations in the state. While everyone might not be so lucky to see sub-$3 gasoline, all Floridians should expect a sizeable discount this week."

Sumter has the lowest average in Central Florida at $3.16 per gallon. Marion has the highest average at $3.25.

In the Tampa Bay area, Citrus County has the lowest prices at $3.14 per gallon, while Polk’s are the highest at $3.22 per gallon
