Aramis Ayala will challenge Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody in the Nov. 8 general election after clinching the Democratic Party’s nomination in Tuesday night’s primary.

The former State Attorney says constitutional protections have been rolled back in Florida, and their restoration is among her top priorities should she win the general election. On her campaign website, she promises to “fight to make sure the separation of church and state is a reality in Florida,” and to “endure women’s right and privacy is protected.”

Ayala went Beyond the Soundbite to discuss her positions on the issues, including capital punishment — something that became controversial during her tenure as a prosecutor.

As for the incumbent, Attorney General Ashley Moody counts some powerful organizations among her supporters. Our news partner, Florida Politics, reports both the Florida Police Chief’s Association and the Florida Chamber of Commerce are backing the Republican's reelection bid.

Moody has focused a lot of attention on combating human trafficking and scams. This past week, she joined Gov. Ron DeSantis to announce 20 arrests for alleged election fraud.
