APOPKA, Fla. — The Apopka community is mourning a firefighter who died Friday night.

His death comes more than two weeks after the family of Austin Duran says he was injured while working at his fire station on June 30.

To honor the fallen first responder, Kasheta Farms is hosting a two-day fundraiser and donating the proceeds to Duran’s family.

“We’ve had a lot of people in the community, and different vendors donate items that we’re raffling off,” explained Caitlin Kasheta, who organized the event.

Kasheta says she has always had great respect for first responders who serve the country.

When she heard about a firefighter being severely injured, she made plans to help in any way she could.

They were initially holding the fundraiser to help with Duran’s medical expenses before he passed away.

“We knew we had to jump in and do something,” said Kasheta.

According to Facebook posts from Duran’s family, their son and brother was severely injured while moving a heavy piece of equipment that fell on top of him at his job.

He suffered crushed organs and broken bones, and spent the last 17 days in the hospital before passing away.

So far, Kasheta Farms has raised just over $3,000.

“Now, we’re just trying to give the Duran family a big community hug with the funds that we’re raising,” Kasheta said.

Nearby neighbors, including the Apopka Police Department and people from surrounding communities, showed support.

On Sunday, the farm will host another fundraising day for Duran’s family.

They plan on being open from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
