The bill is named after Miya Marcano, 19, a college student who was killed last fall. Orange County sheriff’s deputies suspect a maintenance worker at the apartment complex where she lived killed her before committing suicide.
The measure, Senate Bill 898, was signed into legislation at a private signing ceremony with Marcano's family in Tallahassee.
Miya's Law will enforce the following safety measures:
- Require landlords to do background screenings on employees
- Require the background checks to include national screenings for domestic violence and the sex offender registry
- Require staff to give 24-hour notice before using a master key to enter a tenant’s unit
- Require staff to maintain a key log with details on who has access and when it’s used
“Miya was with us today. Her light continue to guide us and we know that she would’ve never want anyone to go through what she went through," said Miya Marcano's mother, Yma Scarbriel.
Miya Marcano Foundation Board Director Jodi D. Covington says she is hopeful that more states will follow and pass Miya’s Law.
