ORLANDO, Fla. — Testimony began on Tuesday in the Markeith Loyd trial, where he is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton.

If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

He is already serving a life sentence for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon.

In opening statements Monday, the state argued video evidence should leave the jury no doubt Loyd is guilty.

"The evidence in the case will show that the man who chased her, who circled her, who stood over her, held the gun and fired the shots that ended her life was the defendant Markeith Amangelo Loyd," Assistant State Attorney Ryan Williams said Monday.

The defense claims there is a conflict with the Orlando Police Department and the way the video evidence was compiled.

Loyd's attorneys argue he was insane when he shot Clayton, and believed the police were out to get him.

"These people know, that I believe the police was trying to kill me and they told no one. They endangered Debra, me and everyone else, but they told no one and they're trying to keep the jury and the people from knowing this," Loyd said Monday.

The state's witnesses will include a relative of Loyd's ex-girlfriend who saw him at Walmart and alerted Clayton that he was there.

Others will testify they saw Clayton call for backup and yell at Loyd to stop and get down before any shots were fired.

This trial was supposed to start last year, but was delayed because of the pandemic.
