ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orange County woman is trying help the homeless by serving up food at Lake Eola.

Kimberly Link was homeless herself as a teen, and is now trying to give back.

She was a nurse for 30 years, but then decided to started a food truck business.

Those earnings from the food truck goes towards providing meals to the homeless at Lake Eola.

Sunday she served up some homemade chili, salad and corn bread.

“When you give people food, it does not matter how bad the day was, you feel that much better inside,” said Link.

According the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness, from September of last year until August of this year, there were more 3,500 homeless in Orange County.

People like Javier Ortiz were among those coming out Sunday, thankful for a good homemade meal. He is originally from Mexico and has lived in Orlando for 20 years.

“I live under the bridge. There are a lot of mosquitos and you have to wake up almost all the time because you don't know who is coming in the night,” said Ortiz.

Ortiz is still keeping a positive attitude and said he does not mind working hard to earn some cash doing odd jobs.

“I trim some of the trees, some of the bushes, and I do raking and painting,” Ortiz said.

He said when does earn some cash from that, he's able get a hotel to stay in.

Link said this why she does these meals, to help people like Ortiz.

“That they are seen, they are worthy, and there are people that love them,” said Link.

Link does the free meals at Lake Eola every other Sunday, where she could see up 100 homeless people, and said there are a lot people who need help.

She said she will keep doing what she can serving up homecooked meals.

“As long as God gives me strength and the donations to do it.”
