Michael Hoffman, a professional engineer from Tampa, told Spectrum News that a 12-story condo collapse in Surfside early Thursday might have involved a mistake early in the design or construction process.

“In a lot of these matters, it does kind of boil down to ‘Was it a design error? Did somebody miss a calculation? Or did somebody not follow through with the details of the construction documents in the field?’” Hoffman told Spectrum Bay News 9 anchor Erin Murray.

Hoffman also told Murray the process of building a high-rise and the safety processes in place, and he shared whether the building’s location could have played a role in its collapse.

“What can also happen is over the years, corrosion could have gotten into some of the structural steel," he said, "and if your steel gets compromised, that’s a problem with oceanside buildings."
