He said he would do so “as a guest of my wife, who serves in the 117th Congress.”

Demings referred to U.S. Rep. Val Demings, who represents Florida’s 10th congressional district of western Orange County, and he made his comments Thursday at the county’s regular coronavirus news briefing.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer followed Demings at the podium.

“I won’t be in D.C., and I’m not married to a member of Congress,” he said lightheartedly.

The moment of levity gave way to a serious topic: the question of violence in the U.S. leading up to the inauguration. The FBI has warned of armed protests at state capitols from right-wing extremists in the coming days after a mob of President Donald Trump supporters stormed and trashed the U.S. Capitol last week.

Demings and Dyer said law enforcement officials tell them they see no indication of planned violence but that they’ll be prepared for it.

“The various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies here have engaged in contingency planning if the situation calls for a police response in our community,” Demings said.

Demings touted the collaboration and preparation of federal, state, and local law enforcement through the Central Florida Intelligence Exchange, a so-called Fusion Center that serves nine counties and says it works to detect and disrupt terrorist and criminal activity.

Dyer likewise emphasized “the ability to share information and to be prepared together for whatever may come.”

“There’s no indication of any extraordinary activity that is going to occur in our community,” Dyer added. “But I want to assure our citizens that we are prepared in the event that something out of the ordinary could occur.”
