MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – More political signs have been stolen from someone's property in Brevard County – and this time the person was caught on camera.

  • The theft was caught on camera

  • Mary Gonzalez's new sign is a message to the thief

One couple isn't backing down to what they consider “intimidation.” From the front yard of her Tropical Trail home, Mary Gonzalez stood near where a pair of her presidential candidate campaign signs were stolen Tuesday night.

And her security camera caught it all.

The footage shows a car driving by, stopping, and a man getting out and scooping up the signs around 9 p.m.

"Came out, took that sign (points) and that sign, stuck them in his car and left," Gonzalez said.

She and her husband were home at the time, unaware of what happened, but a neighbor just happened to be outside at the time and saw the theft.

"We went back on the tape, and sure enough there he was," she said.

It’s a concern for Gonzalez because of what they've been through in the past. She says people have said bad things to her husband. Someone bashed their mailbox. All over their political views, she says.

"We finally decided, no intimidation, signs are going out," Gonzalez said. "So we put them out, and a week later they were gone."

The couple wasn't going to quit. They bought more signs, and one has a very clear message.

"It's aimed at the person who stole our signs," Gonzalez said. "And it says you may have stolen our signs, but you can't steal our vote."

Gonzalez is worried that things could get worse, considering the man trespassed on their property to swipe them. For now, she is bringing the new signs in at night and has a message for him.

"Just stop, and instead, go out and vote," she said.

Gonzalez has filed a police report. She said she's out $70 for the cost of the signs.

Stealing signs from private property is a misdemeanor petit theft charge punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
