GENEVA, Fla. — A man was killed in a boating crash in the St. Johns River near Lake Harney on Christmas Day, officials confirm.

  • Boating incident kills man crossing Lake Harney in Geneva
  • First responders rushed to Jolly Gator Fish Camp on SR 46
  • Seminole County Fire says it appears man's boat struck pylon

First responders were called to Jolly Gator Fish Camp, 4650 E. State Road 46 in Geneva at about noon, according to Seminole County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Kealing and Seminole County Fire.

The fish camp has access to the St. Johns River, which connects to Lake Harney to the north.

According to a boating accident report by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a 1996 Summerford 19-foot fiberglass racing vessel operated by John Erle Gebhardt was headed south on the St. Johns when for an unknown reason, the boat turned toward the western shore, ran aground, and struck a tree.

Gebhardt, 39, of Geneva was ejected from the boat and hit a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.

Alcohol is not suspected to be related to the crash, the FWC said. The crash is under investigation.
