ORLANDO, Fla. — When Markeith Loyd goes on trial for the death of an Orlando police officer next year, he may enter an insanity plea.

During a hearing Wednesday in Orlando, Loyd's attorneys said they were considering an insanity defense for the trial, which starts May 1.

An attorney said that if they filed for the insanity defense, it would be by March 2. Part of the problem, the attorney said, is that transcripts of testimony from mental health experts have not been released. Court reporters are behind on getting these transcripts out.

Loyd was convicted earlier this year for the murder of estranged girlfriend Sade Dixon. He received a life sentence for the crime.

Loyd next goes on trial for the murder of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, who was shot and killed outside an Orlando Walmart in January 2017. Prosecutors say Clayton confronted Loyd, who was wanted for Dixon's death at the time. They say he killed Clayton and fled. He was arrested several days later.

Loyd was in court for Wednesday's hearing and was quiet throughout the proceeding. Last month Loyd was removed from the courtroom after he jumped up and began shouting profanities at the judge. Loyd was in court because he had made a complaint against his defense attorney.

The next hearing for Loyd is set for March.
